You can gain credits by participating in competitions such as SOTW, AOTW, DOTM, etc.
You can gain skill points by posting gfx works and if people find it awesome they will rep you. So essentially reputation = skill points.

Anyway, join as many competitions as you can for points, you can also open a shop for points.

But there's rarely any buyer here, don't rely on your shop.

Yeah I've got two shops and no buyers... probably because my skills are crap but anyway as everyone said participate in OTW and post in count to infinity.
